Since 2012 Mr. Murphy has practiced law as an independent practitioner, working on a wide range of domestic and international transactions utilizing his drafting and negotiating skills, and his political contacts.   Mr. Murphy has also continued to act in a support role for certain litigation matters.

From 1989 to 2012, Mr. Murphy was "Of Counsel" to the Allen Matkins law firm, resident in their Los Angeles office as a member of the tax department.  However, his primary practice was as a transactional attorney, negotiating business transactions and drafting the related documentation.  

During a portion of the same years that Mr. Murphy has acted as Of Counsel to Allen Matkins, Mr. Murphy also acted as Of Counsel to the prominent litigator Pierce O'Donnell.  Mr. O'Donnell's firms have been firms which specialized only in litigation.  

Prior to working for Allen Matkins, Mr. Murphy spent four years working in New York in the international tax departments of Deloitte Haskins and Sells and Milbank Tweed Hadley and McCloy.  During those years, Mr. Murphy concentrated on international tax planning for multinational corporations such as BASF, Disney and Pepsi. 

At various points during his legal career, the diversity of Mr. Murphy’s’ activities as counsel have ranged from representing various native American tribes to being IBM’s facilitator for development and construction of a manufacturing facility in Tianjin, China.

He has extensive entrepreneurial experience in China where he raised capital and completed condominium real estate development projects, residing in Tianjin, China from 2002 to 2008. His Asian business experience spans multiple industries such as agricultural commodities, tech import/export, and energy supply (including coal, oil and fuel products) and several countries in addition to China including South Korea, Thailand, Taiwan and Indonesia.

Since leaving New York in 1989, and commencing his relationship with Allen Matkins, Mr. Murphy has actively engaged in a variety of entrepreneurial activities inside and outside the United States.  Over the last twenty years, Mr. Murphy has been the owner of a variety of business enterprises including restaurants, bars/clubs, a software application company, a sports broadcasting company, a television production company, a construction management company and others.

With respect to all such entrepreneurial activities, Mr. Murphy was either involved at the Board level or at the day-to-day operational level.  In addition, in most such entrepreneurial activities, Mr. Murphy was responsible for arranging the funding of such activities.

Mr. Murphy has also engaged in various petroleum trading activities.  Mr. Murphy has served as the mandate for a European oil refinery and has been successful in registering customers with Kuwait Petroleum Company.

Mr. Murphy has been very active in political circles at the local and state levels in California for the last 25 years.  Mr. Murphy has been a registered lobbyist in the State of California and has utilized his political relationships to assist himself and clients in a variety of endeavors.  

Mr. Murphy has raised funds and/or sat on the boards of several California non-profits including: Clinica Oscar Romero, one of the largest free clinics in downtown Los Angeles which serves over 50,000 patients per year, the Salvadoran Leadership and Educational Foundation, and the East Los Angeles YMCA.  

Mr. Murphy speaks Spanish at a conversational level and has travelled extensively throughout the world.
